Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini has left the club to undergo an undisclosed, “non-baseball” medical procedure, according to manager Brandon Hyde.
“We love Trey and we’re going to respect this privacy in this thing and we’ll have more information as we know more,” Hyde told reporters in Port Charlotte, Fla., where the team was playing the Tampa Bay Rays March 7.
Mancini’s status for Opening Day is unclear.
Mancini has appeared in just five games this spring, collecting four hits and two RBIs in 14 at-bats. Mancini, who has not played since March 2, has missed time for flu-like symptoms, which has also affected several other players.
The rebuilding Orioles would be hampered without Mancini in the lineup. He has established himself as the face of the franchise and was the Orioles’ MVP in 2019. Mancini has proudly said that he wants to be around when the Orioles finally put the pieces in place to build a contender.
