DLA Piper recently achieved a victory for its client, Maryland Reclamation Associates, Inc. (MRA), in a case filed against Harford County, Maryland. On November 6, the Maryland Court of Appeals granted certiorari to review an intermediate appellate court ruling that overturned a US$45 million jury award to MRA last year.
The suit centered around MRA's right to use its property as a rubble landfill. After a Harford County Circuit Court jury ruled in the company's favor, the county appealed to the state's intermediate appellate court. In an August ruling, the Court of Special Appeals overturned the jury verdict, finding that MRA failed to file its circuit court challenge within the statute of limitations. In a victory for MRA, the state's highest court has agreed to review that decision, based on arguments presented by DLA Piper.
