Linebacker Josh Bynes said it is "like full circle" coming back to the Ravens organization that gave him his start in 2011, while head coach John Harbaugh said the return of Bynes and the signing of inside linebacker L.J. Fort is all about getting stronger at a position that has been a disappointment this season.
Bynes and Fort were signed just days apart, the clearest signal yet that the Ravens are not pleased with the play of inside linebackers Patrick Onwuasor, Kenny Young and Chris Board, who have taken the lead roles in the middle of the Ravens defense with the free agency departure of Pro Bowl linebacker C.J. Mosley.
In consecutive losses to the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns, the Ravens allowed more than 500 yards in back-to-back games for the first time in franchise history, and while there is plenty of blame to go around, the play at inside linebacker has been an issue in terms of defending the run, coverage and assignments.
