Second annual charity golf tournament pays tribute to the late Bob Bell

Bob Bell Automotive, one of the most well-known, family-owned and operated automobile stores in the greater Baltimore metro area, in partnership with There Goes My Hero, the organization dedicated to saving lives, providing hope and helping those impacted by blood cancer, yesterday hosted more than a hundred people at the 2nd Annual Bob Bell Automotive Charity Golf Tournament. The event, which took place at Chartwell Golf & Country Club in Severna Park, raised over $60,000 to support blood cancer patients and included an 18-hole round of golf, bone marrow drive, and dinner featuring a video presentation and special guest speakers from each organization.

“Because of my own battle with leukemia, I understand firsthand how the smallest act — whether it be a warm blanket, a good meal or a simple smile — can make a huge difference in a patient’s life,” said Erik Sauer, founder of There Goes My Hero. “Through this event and the selfless efforts of the entire Bob Bell Automotive team, we’ll be able to increase our ability to improve the lives of adults and children affected by blood cancer and further demonstrate to the community that anyone can be a hero.”

Now in its second year, the Annual Bob Bell Automotive Golf Tournament originated in honor of the late Bob Bell, founder of Bob Bell Automotive, who passed away in 2011 after battling leukemia. All proceeds from the event will go towards providing meals, transportation and other services to patients undergoing treatment, as well as towards future bone marrow registry drives.

“My father was an extraordinary person and the backbone of this company,” said Bird Bell, daughter of Bob Bell and owner of Bob Bell Automotive. “We wanted to find a meaningful and impactful way to honor his memory, and I can’t think of anything better than helping others affected by blood cancer.”

Each year, there are more than 170,000 cases of blood cancer diagnosed in the United States. As the third leading cause of cancer deaths and the number one cause of children deaths compared to any other disease, 70 percent of patients are unable to find a bone marrow match within their family and must rely on the generous donations of complete strangers.
