UMBC freshman guard Jose Placer (Orlando, Fla.) was named America East Conference Rookie of the Week for games ending Jan, 19, 2019.
Placer scored a career-best 22 points, knocking down 8 of 11 shots from the field in the Retrievers' 65-64 overtime victory against Albany Jan. 19. He scored UMBC's first seven points of overtime before Ricky Council II's (Durham, N.C.) game-winning trey with five seconds left.
Placer's previous scoring high was 13 points, recording against High Point Nov. 17.
The accolade was the first of the season for a Retriever.
