On the eve of a 30% water rate hike coming before Baltimore’s spending board tomorrow, City Council members demanded an independent rate study, calling the increase “unfair and irresponsible.”
“A 30% increase over three years without any kind of study to justify it?” Councilman Zeke Cohen said today. “Every single day I hear from my constituents who are right on the margins, saying, ‘If rates go up by 30%, I don’t think I can afford to live in Baltimore any more.’”
The city should not continue to make residents pay for Baltimore’s failure over decades to maintain aging water and sewer infrastructure without scrutiny, Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer said, standing outside City Hall with fellow lawmakers and advocates for water customers.
