Winter is coming for Baltimore City schools, and no, that’s not an overly dramatic reference for some students, teachers and staff who’ll be sitting in dated school buildings that aren’t ready for the cold. Few will forget this past winter in Baltimore City Public Schools, when the district dealt with backlash for keeping schools open in early January as students sat huddled together in winter coats in sub-40-degree classrooms.
It’s not even December yet, but the thermometer is dropping, and parents, teachers and education advocates are bracing for another cold season. Tonight, BEE: Baltimoreans for Educational Equity and Jewish volunteer service organization Repair the World: Baltimore are gathering those concerned folks in Charles Village to talk about how they can pitch in and raise awareness—more warmly, over beer, wine and pizza.
Repair the World: Baltimore associate Josh Sherman said his organization will discuss ways for locals to get involved in volunteering with nonprofits and in schools. BEE, meanwhile, will highlight school infrastructure-related legislation in the upcoming General Assembly session and talk about the Kirwan Commission‘s review of state school funding policies.
