Thirty-five Lawmakers Awarded for Conservative Voting Records
The American Conservative Union Foundation (ACUF) has just released its ratings of the 2018 meeting of the Maryland General Assembly. ACUF’s Ratings—both federal and state—are an initiative of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability. These ratings are designed to reflect how over 8,000 of the nation’s elected officials view the role of government and illustrate the differences between chambers of the legislature, while revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect Marylanders.
ACUF reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both the Senate and House to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member. According to ACUF’s Year in Review, the Maryland General Assembly’s overall conservative score improved compared to the 2017 session (from 22.65 percent to 30.78 percent).
Maryland legislators voted on key issues during the 2018 session. In one or both chambers, conservative legislators voted to oppose seizing firearms without due process, committing the state to a politicized energy agenda, and establishing automatic voter registration.
“Maryland’s small band of determined conservatives fought hard to bring reason to the liberal General Assembly and voted to reform the state’s disastrous tax code and enact lower rates for everyone,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “They also protected the important constitutionally-guaranteed Second Amendment rights of all citizens. We applaud these courageous conservatives as they fight to advance reforms that protect individual liberties.”
The average score for Republican Maryland House Representatives was 81 percent, while just 23 percent of all representatives earned awards for scoring 80 percent or better. Just 4 percent of Maryland State Senators earned awards. The overall average for the Maryland General Assembly was 30.78 percent.
