SECU Donates School Supplies

8/29/18

For the second year in a row, SECU – Maryland’s largest credit union – has partnered with the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools and numerous other individual schools throughout Maryland to donate school supplies to children and teachers.

In a campaign that ran from July 23 to August 10, SECU employees and members donated nearly $1,000 in school supplies through donation boxes in the lobbies of SECU’s financial centers and its headquarters in Linthicum. Donations included writing supplies (pencils, pens, highlighters, etc.), arts and crafts supplies (scissors, crayons, glue sticks, etc.), and other school gear (lunch boxes, backpacks, calculators, etc.).

“With the average family spending over $600 on school supplies, getting kids ready to go back to school can be a very stressful time for families who may lack the resources to purchase school supplies,” says Rod Staatz, SECU’s President and CEO. “I am very proud that our employees and the generous people who bank at SECU can make a difference for many individuals in our community by helping kids get off to a great start as they begin a new school year.”

Schools and organizations throughout Maryland which directly benefitted from SECU’s School Supply Drive include:

  • Book of Life (Annapolis);
  • Brightwood College (Fullerton);
  • Brooklyn Park Middle School (Pasadena);
  • Deep Brown Elementary School (Columbia);
  • Empowering Minds Resource Center (Towson);
  • Head Start of Washington County (Hagerstown);
  • Local schools in LaVale, Owings Mills, and Salisbury;
  • Springhill Lake Elementary (Greenbelt).

SECU has a long tradition of supporting communities throughout Maryland. In addition to encouraging its employees to volunteer in the community, SECU staff are given time off during the regular business day each month for volunteer activities.

“Our annual School Supply Drive represents just one more way in which SECU gives back to the communities we serve,” says Staatz.

SECU also provides free financial education presentations and financial assistance via programs like Kids Helping Kids, The Love Blanket, and A Wider Circle. SECU recently launched the Goals for Kids program with the Baltimore Blast, which supports the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, and supports annual food drives and the United Way campaign.
