It was 25 years ago when Digable Planets gifted us “Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space),” an Afro-futuristic, jazz-laden debut that’s equal parts smooth and cerebral. The trio’s sophomore album, “Blowout Comb,” one year later cemented them as torch-bearers of the introspective, bop-infused rap that came flooding out of New York and onto national airwaves in the early ’90s. All in just two years–the group broke up in 1995, citing “creative differences.”
Fortunately, Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Mariana “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving have linked up again from time to time, and have been busy touring and playing festivals across Europe and the United States in the last couple years. Now Digable Planets is coming to Baltimore Soundstage, the venue announced today.
They’ll stop there with a live band on Nov. 22—Thanksgiving night—to get you off the couch post-food coma to enjoy some classic hip-hop. Tickets ($27.50) go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m.
