UMB’s Police Force and Community Engagement Center Team Up for Free Cookout; New Chief Set to Welcome Neighbors

WHO: Members of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Force (UMBPF) along with the university’s Community Engagement Center (CEC) and the West Baltimore Community

WHAT: National Night Out is a nationwide event that takes place every year on the second Tuesday of August. The event promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to strengthen relationships and promote a true sense of community. Millions of communities across the country participate in National Night Out annually with block parties, parades, cookouts, and various other community events.

WHEN: Tuesday,August 7, 2018

5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

WHERE: The University of Maryland Community Engagement Center

*Located on the lawn between the Community Engagement Center and the Maryland Proton Treatment Center*

INFO: The UMBPF along with the CEC are poised to host a community cookout to celebrate National Night Out. The event will allow members of the West Baltimore community to meet and mingle with University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) faculty, staff, and students, as well as UMB law enforcement officials including the university’s new chief of police, Alice K. Cary, MS. Cary comes to UMB from the University of Oregon Police Department, where she served as patrol operations captain.

In addition to meeting university police officers, participants will get a first-hand look at the department’s policing equipment, including a police cruiser and Segway. Community members can also anticipate a special appearance by McGruff the Crime Dog as well as music and lawn games including cornhole and giant Jenga.

Free burgers and hot dogs will be prepared and served by UMB police officers and CEC staff. Soft drinks and water will also be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets to the event.
