CEM improves communities for 25 years

7/31/18

CEM celebrates 25 years of service to improve communities, commemorating its tenure as a leading science and engineering firm, and active philanthropic contributor to local organizations in Harford County and beyond.

With what started as a small, two-person business, CEM President and CEO Stephanie Hau and her husband, Joe, combined their backgrounds in geology with a joint vision to improve the community. Through their technical environmental expertise and dedication to philanthropic efforts, the two have since grown the company to over 50 people, occupying a uniquely renovated building in the heart of Bel Air.

“As we continued to grow over the past 25 years, we focused on our shared vision of contribution,” said Hau. “We have had the honor of providing services to enhance our community and make a difference in the lives of others.”

In 2013, CEM set a goal to share $1 million with nonprofits by 2025. To date, the total nears $600,000. Hau encourages her employees to join in the effort by matching personal charitable donations and dedicating 5 percent of CEM’s annual profits to charities with missions focused on improving humanity.

“Everything we do reflects our core values — clarity, integrity, community and opportunity,” said Hau. “We have found this serves as a key formula for success at CEM.”

Recognized for numerous accomplishments since the company’s inception, Hau holds honors for the SmartCEO Cornerstone Award and the Maryland Small Business Administration’s Person of the Year, among others. In addition, her leadership built the framework to become one of the fastest-growing, woman-owned businesses in the region.
