Jack Dwyer, Chairman of the Board and sole owner of CFG Community Bank, a locally owned and operated community bank, recently announced a $100,000 donation to the Capital Gazette Memorial Scholarship Fund in light of the recent shooting. CFG Community Bank has a branch at 888 Bestgate Road, the same building where the senseless tragedy occurred.
“My heart breaks for the families, friends and coworkers of the Capital Gazette. I can’t imagine a more frightening afternoon than what these journalists experienced,” said Dwyer. “This horrific incident really hit close to home as we have a branch in the same building as the Gazette.”
Dwyer continued, “Education is very important to me which is why I am donating $100,000 towards the scholarship fund created in memory of the journalists who lost their lives.
I also want to thank Anne Arundel County Executive, Steve Schuh, for making us aware of this much needed Scholarship Fund,” Dwyer added, “I am hoping that my donation will encourage other local CEOs to do the same and help this grieving community.”
The Capital Gazette Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide an annual scholarship for selected students pursuing a degree in journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park. The fund celebrates the lives of journalists Gerald Fischman and John McNamara, who were alumni of the University; Robert Hiaasen, who was a lecturer in journalism at the University; Wendi Winters, reporter, and Rebecca Smith, a member of the Capital Gazette sales team. The scholarship fund was created by tronc, Inc, the parent company of the Capital Gazette and Baltimore Sun, and is managed by the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.
