Maryland safety Darnell Savage Jr. will be one of the Terps' few senior defenders and one of the most experienced players on the entire team for the 2018 season. Savage, who has played in 34 games and started 25, understands leadership is now a larger part of his job description, especially among the team's defensive backs.
"I think that's one thing that I've definitely improved on," Savage said after Maryland's spring game April 14. "I think I'm doing a pretty good job of that right now. I'm now one of the oldest on the defense, so I feel like I do a good job with just keeping everybody encouraged and keeping everybody upbeat and just being a leader.
"Everybody's different. You relate to people a lot differently. Not everybody's the same. I sit in [the defensive back room], I try to learn all I can so it when it comes up on the field or when it does come up in the meeting room, then I can help as well, and it doesn't have to be always [defensive backs coaches Chuck Heater or Aazaar-Abdul Rahim]."
