Annette Danek-Akey
The Y in Central Maryland is pleased to announce the addition of Annette Danek-Akey, Byron F. Marchant, David J. Schwing, Dr. Thomas Smyth and Gary Williams to its Association Board of Directors – a group of committed professionals entrusted with upholding the legal responsibility and governance of the Y, in addition to preserving its mission and vision.
Danek-Akey, the senior vice president of fulfillment at Penguin Random House, has more than 25 years of experience in supply chain management, industrial engineering, guiding strategic planning and managing warehouse distribution. A supply chain veteran, Danek-Akey was featured in Supply Chain World Magazinein December 2017 and has been presenting at AWESOME symposiums (Achieving Women’s Excellence in Supply Chain, Operations, Management and Education) since 2014. In addition to her Y board service, she is also president of the board of directors for Carroll County Community College and sits on the board of directors of WERC (Warehouse Education Research Council).
Marchant is the president & CEO of the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation. He has held positions as executive vice president, general counsel and chief administrative officer for Black Entertainment Television (BET) in Washington D.C., partner at Patton Boggs, LLP, law firm as well as other leadership positions at TeleCommunications Systems Inc. and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He is a dedicated volunteer and currently serves on the board of directors of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the National Sailing Hall of Fame and the U. S. Naval Academy Foundation. Marchant graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978 and holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia Law School.
Schwing is senior vice president and group manager at PNC Bank. He is a lifelong member of the Baltimore community with over 28 years of experience in the banking and financial services industry. At PNC Bank, Schwing provides leadership to a team of relationship managers responsible for the development of commercial and institutional business in the Baltimore area and surrounding counties. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mount Saint Mary’s University in 1989.
Dr. Smyth currently serves as president & CEO of the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Princeton University and studied at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before moving to the west coast in 1986 for six years of surgery and urology residency training in the Department of Urology at Stanford University. Dr. Smyth helped lead the formation of Maryland Urology Associates PA in Baltimore, which merged with other practices to form Chesapeake Urology Associates. He spent 10 years at Chesapeake Urology serving in various leadership capacities. Prior to joining the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, he had a robust clinical practice in general urology. In addition to his service at the Y, he serves on the board of trustees of Calvert Hall.
Williams is president of Williams Asset Management, a privately-owned financial planning and investment management firm in Columbia, MD. For the past 20 years, Williams has focused on assisting pre- and post-retirees with achieving financial security. Williams is active in several causes and charities. In addition to his work with the Y, he serves on the investment committee for Mount Saint Joseph High School and as a board member and passionate supporter of the Brigance Brigade Foundation. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Towson University.
