UMB Catalyst Campaign Tops $400 Million

5/21/18

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) has recorded more than $400 million in gifts and pledges in its $750 million Catalyst campaign. Launched publically in October 2017 with $314 million in hand, the fundraising endeavor is the largest in UMB’s 211 year history.

Campaign priorities for the West Baltimore anchor institution include student scholarships, faculty excellence, research, clinical programs, and community engagement. Additional Big Ideas to be collaboratively addressed through the campaign involve the University’s highly-ranked Schools of Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Graduate Studies in studying and treating pain, addiction, and critical diseases and in enhancing entrepreneurship and community service.

Leading the campaign effort are UMB alumni Ellen H. Yankellow, PharmD, President and CEO of Correct Rx Pharmacy Services, and Brian J. Gibbons, JD, Chairman and CEO of Greenberg Gibbons Commercial.

Of the fundraising success, UMB President Jay A. Perman, MD, says, “We’re delighted with the Catalyst Campaign’s remarkable progress to date. It’s a powerful indication that our alumni and friends are committed to UMB’s continued growth. We have enormous capabilities in each of our mission areas—education, research, clinical care, and service—and those capabilities will be amplified as we attract more resources to our work. We can’t wait to see the impact we’ll have here in Baltimore and well beyond.”

UMB enrolls 6,700 students in its six nationally ranked professional schools and interdisciplinary graduate school, producing a highly-trained professional work force to serve Maryland, the region, and the world. A major public research university, UMB is a national leader in biomedical research, attracting more than $550 million annually in external grants and contracts. With an annual budget in excess of $1.1 billion, the University generates more than 18,000 jobs and along with the University of Maryland Medical Center and affiliated physician practices, generates more than $6.6 billion in annual economic activity.
