There’s Now An Official Bobblehead For UMBC’s Historic March Madness Upset Of UVA

Local sports boosters: If the slumping Orioles have got you down, here’s yet another reminder that the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s men’s basketball program made history two months ago by toppling the mighty 1-seeded University of Virginia. Now, there’s a bobblehead to mark the triumphant day.

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee this morning unveiled a mock-up of the new wobbling collectible to celebrate the Retrievers’ 20-point blowout of the Cavaliers on national television on March 16. The game marked the first-ever victory by a 16-seeded NCAA Tournament contestant over a 1-seeded team. (We did say it could happen, even with slim odds.)

It also brought some unexpected national attention to the Catonsville institution, with orders for Retrievers gear flooding the bookstore and business marketing experts predicting companies would come calling about a chance to put their name on the school’s new $85 million sports arena.
