Conversations about gender have increasingly become part of the mainstream as the media has given more coverage and representation to people who have publicly identified as transgender or as allies of the LGBTQ community. But like so many things, the community was there well before the mainstream started paying attention.
Susan Stryker, an associate professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Arizona and director of the Institute for LGBT Studies, will appear at Red Emma’s tonight to discuss her newly revised book, “Transgender History.” Per Red Emma’s, the book includes “stories of the transsexual and transvestite communities in the years following World War II; trans radicalism and social change from 1966 through the early 1970s; the mid-’70s to 1990-the era of identity politics; and the gender issues witnessed through the ’90s and ’00s” and “is essential to understanding the past, present, and future of the struggle for trans liberation.”
