When Maryland sixth-year senior safety Denzel Conyers injured his right knee during the Terps' game against Central Florida last Sept. 17, he immediately knew he had torn his ACL because he had suffered the same injury in his left knee in high school. What he didn't know was whether his college career was finished.
Several months later, Conyers still didn't know. He indicated on Twitter in April that he was awaiting the NCAA's decision on his application for a medical hardship waiver. A player must not have played more than 30 percent of his team's games and the injury must have occurred during the first half of the season to earn an extra year. Having suffered the season-ending injury during Maryland's third game of the season, Conyers satisfied the requirements and was awarded a sixth season.
Conyers found out the news during spring break while he was playing video games with his cousin.
