Following a productive collegiate baseball career at the University of Miami, Matt Tyner was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1980. While injuries shortened his professional career and prevented Tyner from reaching the major leagues, he has still made it to Baltimore.
Tyner was named the head coach of the Towson University baseball program June 23. Tyner, 58, brings a lifetime of baseball experience and a record of success at several previous stops to a Tigers program that has endured four straight losing seasons. The native of Decatur, Ill., succeeds Mike Gottlieb, who coached Towson to three NCAA Tournament berths during his 30 years at the helm.
"I was familiar with the [Towson] program while I was at the University of Richmond," Tyner said. "We lost to Towson early in the 2016 season, and the tenacity of the team really stood out to me. When this position came open, four or five of my ex-Orioles teammates told me that I just had to go for the job."
