Archbishop Curley soccer head coach Barry Stitz had long ago given up on seeing Nick Richardson, a rising senior who plays defense for the Friars, named the Gatorade Boys' Soccer Player of the Year for Maryland.
The yearly award is usually given out right after the season ends, and Stitz, who nominated Richardson, assumed a player from another school had been selected. The honor usually goes to seniors, so Richardson would have another shot at winning it.
A couple weeks ago, however, Stitz received an email from Gatorade saying Richardson was a finalist for the award. A week later, Richardson was announced the winner.
