Miles & Stockbridge is pleased to announce that three of the firm’s lawyers have been recognized by The Daily Record with its Leadership in Law awards: Thomas E. Lynch, III (Lifetime Achievement Award), Michael A. Brown (Leadership in Law Award) and Elizabeth A. Hafey (Generation J.D. Award).
Lynch is a principal in the firm’s Frederick office with a focus on litigation and alternative dispute resolution. Brown, a principal, and Hafey, an associate, are both Baltimore-based litigators in the law firm’s Products Liability and Mass Torts Practice Group and the medical malpractice group within it.

An outside panel of legal and business leaders selected the Leadership in Law honorees, who will be recognized at a networking reception and awards dinner on May 11 at the BWI Hilton in Linthicum Heights, MD. Winners also will be profiled in a special section of The Daily Record.
Thomas E. Lynch, III
For 40 years, Tom Lynch has had a diverse legal practice, including concentrations in litigation, environmental law and business counseling, as well as a background in both mediation and arbitration. The longest serving member of the Maryland State Bar Association ethics committee, he is known for his broad knowledge on ethics matters. He serves as the vice chair of the Maryland Professionalism Center, a board appointed by the Maryland Court of Appeals. He is a past president of the Frederick County Bar Association and has held numerous positions with the Maryland State Bar Association.
Lynch was recently appointed by Governor Larry Hogan to the board of trustees of Frederick Community College. He is a current member of the board of the Community Foundation of Frederick County and recently completed terms on the boards for the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce and the Frederick County YMCA.
In addition to board service for Daybreak Adult Day Services and the Church of the Brethren Learning Center, he has served on committees and task forces for the city of Frederick and Frederick County related to campaign reform laws, juvenile justice, police, transportation, underage drinking and drug prevention, commercial trash, and brownfields, among other issues. He also was responsible for the creation of a nonprofit consensus building organization called the Committee for Frederick County, which he chaired for five years.
As a result of his contributions to the community and to the Bar, Lynch was selected by The Daily Record as one of Maryland’s "Leaders in the Law" in 2003 and was honored with a Vision of Character Award by the Character Counts Council of Frederick County in 2005. The Frederick County Bar Association presented him with the W. Jerome Offutt Award in 2011 for his contribution to the advancement of professionalism and civility in the practice of law in the county. His community service in Frederick has been recognized by Leadership Frederick County with its Distinguished Community Leader Award and by the commissioners of Frederick County with their Volunteer of the Year award.
Michael Brown
The leader of the national trial practice at Miles & Stockbridge, Mike Brown is a nationally recognized litigator known for his trial work for large corporations in jurisdictions around the country. In 2015, he was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an honor accorded to only one percent of trial lawyers in the United States and Canada.
Brown is a member of the board of directors at Miles & Stockbridge and also chairs its diversity committee, overseeing the firm’s commitment to elevate diversity and inclusion from an initiative to a way of life. While he has served as diversity committee chair, the firm’s programs and achievements regarding diversity and inclusion have been recognized by Law360, the Maryland Washington Minority Companies Association, the Greater Baltimore Committee and BTI Litigation Outlook.
For the last two years, Brown has led the annual campaign for the Homeless Persons Representation Project, raising more than $300,000 for the organization, which provides free legal representation and advocacy for clients in Maryland who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. He also serves on the board of the Greater Baltimore Urban League, which helps disadvantaged Marylanders gain access to equal opportunity in employment, education and health care. Since 2013, Brown has served on the board of Mother Seton Academy, a tuition-free Catholic middle school in Baltimore City for low-income families of all faiths and cultures.
Brown was named a “2015 Litigation Trailblazer & Pioneer” by The National Law Journal and a “2015 Rainmaker” by Diversity & The Bar Magazine, published by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association. He earned a pro bono service award from Advocates for Children and Youth.
Elizabeth Hafey
Elizabeth Hafey was appointed in May to the Maryland Health Care Commission as a commissioner by Governor Larry Hogan. She previously served as a commissioner on the Board of Liquor License Commissioners for Baltimore City.
Since 2014, Hafey has served on the board of directors for the Pratt Contemporaries, which seeks to raise awareness of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, and she co-chaired the group’s Black and White Party in January, which raised $190,000 for library renovations and teen and child literacy services. She recently joined the associate leadership council of Junior Achievement of Central Maryland to help carry out its mission to provide relevant, hands-on experiences in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship for local K-12 students.
Hafey is an elected member of the board for the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the Bar Association of Baltimore City (BABC) and also serves as an elected member of the larger BABC board and its executive council. A 2015-2016 graduate of the Maryland State Bar Association’s (MSBA) Leadership Academy, she is now a fellow of the MSBA’s Maryland Bar Foundation and serves on the MSBA’s judicial nominating committee.
She was recognized by the Baltimore Business Journal for its 2016 “40 Under 40” list, which honors professionals under the age of 40 in the Greater Baltimore area who are excelling in their fields and engaging with the community. In 2015, she earned the Monumental City Bar Association’s Young Lawyers/Future History Maker Award.
