SECU Board Chair Donald Tynes Inducted Into African American Credit Union Coalition Hall Of Fame

3/21/17

Donald Tynes, Sr. – Board Chairman of SECU, Maryland’s largest credit union – has been inducted into the African American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC) Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Washington, DC.

The AACUC, which works to help increase diversity in the credit union movement, called Tynes a “titan of the credit union industry who has been a career credit union advocate.”

Tynes has served on SECU’s Board of Directors since 1975, during which he was elected multiple terms as Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. During that time, SECU has experienced exponential growth, transitioning from a state employee-focused financial cooperative to the largest state-chartered credit union in Maryland.

“The success that SECU has realized is due, in large part, to Donald’s leadership and singular vision to offer Marylanders a strong, viable alternative to the big banks, one that puts members’ best interests in the forefront,” says SECU President and CEO Rod Staatz. “I could not be happier to see him recognized with such a prestigious honor, and one that he is most deserving”.

In addition to SECU, Tynes has served as Chairman of the Credit Union Foundation of Maryland and the District of Columbia from 2007-2016. Under his leadership, the Foundation has become one of the premier charitable organizations promoting credit unions and the members they serve.

Beyond the credit union industry, Tynes has been a stalwart supporter and respected leader within the African-American community. A graduate of Morgan State University, Tynes has served on the staff of Morgan’s Carl Murphy Fine Arts Center and as business manager for the Morgan State University Choir. He has been recognized repeatedly for his contributions to business and community service, including being named the Bishop’s Man of the Year for Community Service by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2nd Episcopal District.

Tynes spent 33 years in Maryland State Government, during which he served as Deputy Secretary of the State Department of Personnel and Assistant to the Chief Deputy Comptroller and Human Resources Director for the University of Maryland System. He has also served as Director of Personnel for Anne Arundel County Government. Tynes earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Morgan State University and an Executive Masters of Business Administration from Loyola University in Maryland.
