University of Maryland star junior guard Melo Trimble scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Terps to a 74-64 victory against Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., Feb. 15. Maryland (22-4, 10-3) earned its sixth road win in Big Ten play and seventh true road victory of the season with the win against the Wildcats (19-7, 8-5).
It's the start of a pivotal stretch for the Terps, whose next assignment is road game at 11th-ranked Wisconsin Feb. 19. Nevertheless, a win against Northwestern, which is likely on track to make its first NCAA Tournament, is significant for the Terps. It was made possible because of the contributions from Trimble, who had been struggling with his shot.
Trimble shot 30.8 percent (16-for-52) from the field and 3-for-20 from 3-point range during the four games before the Northwestern contest. He turned it around with a vengeance, shooting 12-for-17 from the field, 4-for-5 from deep and 4-for-5 from the line while displaying the trademark confidence and swagger Maryland fans have come to love about the Upper Marlboro, Md., product.
