On Feb. 2, the Baltimore Orioles announced longtime radio play-by-play man Fred Manfra would work just 11 games this coming season -- all at Oriole Park at Camden Yards -- as he continues to trim his schedule as one of the radio voices of the Orioles.
Manfra, 70, worked about 50 games last season amid health-related issues. This will be his 25th consecutive season as an Orioles announcer, an appropriate way to round out an illustrious broadcasting career for the Baltimore native who graduated from Patterson High in 1964. Manfra joined Glenn Clark Radio Feb. 9 to discuss decreasing his workload and look back at his broadcasting career.
"Well, I'm at peace with it, that's for sure," Manfra said of stepping down. "It's time, because I just cannot do, with the capability I once had, the job that I want to do. I just can't get around as well as I once did -- trying to get there one of these days, if it'll ever happen, but right now, I'm not there where I can do the whole baseball schedule plus spring training and really feel that I'm doing the job that I should be doing."
