The University of Maryland baseball team faced a steep degree of difficulty during the 2016 season. Following its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Super Regionals, the Terps lost a school-record eight players during the 2015 Major League Baseball amateur draft. Maryland didn't qualify for the 2016 NCAA Tournament, but a younger roster was able to get valuable experience.

Maryland is on the flip side this season. With seven starters returning from last year's 30-27 squad that finished sixth in the Big Ten, the Terps are poised to make a run at the conference title and their third NCAA berth in the last four seasons.

Maryland is also receiving a generous amount of preseason praise. Entering the 2017 campaign, the Terps are ranked among the nation's top 25 teams by D1Baseball.com (No. 22), Perfect Game USA (No. 23), Baseball America (No. 24) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (No. 25).
