During Dan Duquette's six seasons as the Orioles' Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations, he's had only two arbitration cases. The Orioles have won both with pitcher Brad Bergesen in 2012 and outfielder Alejandro De Aza in 2015.
This year, the club is scheduled for three with pitchers Brad Brach and Kevin Gausman and catcher Caleb Joseph. Brach has asked for $3,050,000 while the Orioles are offering $2,525,000. Gausman asked for $3,550,000 and the Orioles countered with $3,150,000. Joseph asked for $1 million, and the Orioles offered $700,000.
"The club took the stance that if you file, there's a trial," Duquette said. "We were able to resolve six of the nine cases, and it looks like we are going to have to go to arbitration on a couple of them. We're not afraid of the process. The Orioles have done well in arbitration. It's not our first choice. We tried to get a deal with all of the players, but we weren't successful in this case, and to the extent that we're at this extent of the season, I expect that we'll go to trial."
