Baltimore's entry in the Arena Football League is drawing on city and regional hallmarks in creating an identity.
The team name, the Brigade, was announced at a news conference Jan. 25 along with the logo and uniforms, as the franchise heads toward its season-opener against another new team, the Washington Valor, at the Verizon Center in Washington April 7. Both teams are owned by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the NBA Washington Wizards, NHL Washington Capitals and WNBA Washington Mystics.
After three games on the road, the Brigade's home opener is against the Tampa Bay Storm at Royal Farms Arena in downtown Baltimore May 7.
The significance of the name Brigade is that it describes "a unified military group. … Baltimore is an historic city with a rich military heritage," said Roger Mody, who is overseeing the Baltimore and Washington teams for MSE.
