When the 2015 season ended, Caleb Joseph was in a decent position to succeed Matt Wieters as the Baltimore Orioles' primary catcher. But to the surprise of many, Wieters accepted the team's $15.8 million qualifying offer, and Joseph had to be content to be Wieters' understudy.
Twelve months later, when the Orioles declined to offer Wieters a qualifying offer, this time worth $17.2 million, Joseph should have been in a better position to claim the job.
He wasn't.
After a nightmarish 2016 that included a month on the disabled list with a scary testicular injury and not a single RBI, Joseph will have to be content as Welington Castillo's backup, as the Orioles enter the post-Wieters era.
