The fates have not been kind to the Towson women's basketball program. The Tigers haven't posted a winning season since the 2011-12 squad finished 16-14. The Tigers went 43-80 during the past four years.
But the times are changing at Towson. The 2016-17 Tigers have sprinted to their best start in eight seasons, forging a 5-1 record that included victories against Cornell Nov. 19 and George Mason Nov. 27. Towson's five-game unbeaten run, which equaled the 5-0 start by the 2008-09 Tiger squad, ended with a 75-59 loss to visiting Georgetown Nov. 30. But a Tiger team that went 7-24 during the 2015-16 campaign should easily surpass last year's victory total and could end the program's four-year losing streak.
"It speaks to the chemistry and maturity of this squad," said head coach Niki Reid Geckeler, now in her fourth season at Towson. "We want to be selfless, unified and relentless as a team. They understand the little things that they need to do to be successful. They're playing better defense, rebounding and taking care of the ball."
