Policymakers, Farmers, Attorneys and Regulators Set to Present at the Agriculture and Environmental Law Conference

Event to be held November 18th in Annapolis

WHAT: The University of Maryland’s Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) has recruited a dynamic panel of presenters to discuss the complex intersection of environmental regulation and agriculture in Maryland at the upcoming 2016 Agriculture and Environmental Law Conference. Experts will share their knowledge on issues such as alternative energy on the farm, hot topics in agricultural and environmental law and agritourism and zoning compliance.

WHEN: Friday, November 18, 2016, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHERE: DoubleTree Hotel, 210 Holiday Court, Annapolis, MD 21401

WHO: A distinguished keynote panel will discuss how to achieve water protection goals for the Bay while preserving Delmarva’s agriculture industry.

Keynote Panelists: Md. Secretary of the Environment Ben Grumbles is Maryland’s eighth Secretary of the Environment. He previously served as President of the U.S. Water Alliance, a national environmental non-profit organization educating the public on the value of water and the need for innovative and sustainable solutions. Prior to that, Grumbles headed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Water Program.

Md. Secretary of Agriculture Joseph Bartenfelder was appointed by Governor Larry Hogan to serve as Secretary of Agriculture on December 23, 2014. He grew up on a farm and has been a full-time farmer and small businessman for more than 35 years. His family lives on their farm in Caroline County and also owns and operates two other farms in Dorchester County. Bartenfelder served as a Maryland Delegate 1983-94, representing District 8 (Baltimore County).

Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Ed Kee is an esteemed expert on vegetable science. He is a native Delawarean and has spent his lifetime working in the state’s agriculture industry. He started as the farm manager at Nassau Orchards in Lewes, Delware. He was appointed the Kent County Agricultural Agent for the University of Delaware in 1978, then move to State Vegetable Crops Specialist in Georgetown. In 2004, Kee was appointed as the Extension Agricultural Program Leader Kee retired from the University in 2008 and worked for Hanover Foods Corporation as Director of Agriculture.

Food Safety Modernization Act & Water Usage: Justine Beaulieu, faculty research assistant/good agricultural practices educator, Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, University of Maryland; Sarah Everhart, Legal Specialist & Research Associate, ALEI.

Water Quality & the Bay: Jason Keppler, manager of the Watershed Implementation Program, Office of Resource Conservation, Maryland Department of Agriculture; Dave Newburn, professor of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park; Sam Owings, president of High Impact Environmental.

Agritourism & Zoning Compliance: Kevin Atticks of Grow and Fortify; Randy Marriner of Manor Hill Brewing.

Recent Developments with Nutrient Management Regulations: Dwight Dotterer, nutrient management program administrator of the Maryland Department of Agriculture.

Hot Legal Issues in Agriculture & Environment: Jon Mueller, vice president for litigation at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

INFO: Attendance at the Agriculture and Environmental Law Conference will earn 1 Nutrient Management Program Continuing Learning Education Credit for farmers and 3.5 Delaware Continuing Legal Education Credits.
