Let's return to the 2016 Orioles roster review. If you're just tuning in, this is a player-by-player breakdown of every Oriole who made an appearance during the season, starting with 10 short-timers who barely played and nine bench guys who didn't contribute much. Part three will analyze 10 pitchers who added little value to the Birds in 2016.
The Short-Term Long Men
LHP T.J. McFarland: Whatever the Orioles were hoping McFarland would develop into when they carried him as a Rule 5 pick in 2013, he doesn't seem to be getting there. The 2016 season was his worst yet, as McFarland was torched for a 6.93 ERA during 16 games. The pitching-starved O's rushed him back from a knee injury Aug. 26, and he coughed up four runs in 0.2 innings the next day, his final big league appearance of the year. Like fellow former Rule 5 draftee Ryan Flaherty, the arbitration-eligible McFarland is a non-tender candidate this winter.
