Sports is called the "toy department of life" for a reason.
It shouldn't be hard to figure out why. These are kids' games, played by full-grown men and women, in which folks like you and me can get lost fantasizing about doing the same sorts of things ourselves.
They tap into our love of the games, our loyalty to our cities and our need to bond with others over food, drink and friendship.
But when innocent, trash-talking banter turns into the kind of serious physical confrontation that occurred at the Oakland-Baltimore game Oct. 2, with someone ending up in the hospital with brain injuries, it makes for an unnecessary, heartbreaking situation.
