North Carolina's loss could be a significant win for Maryland and area sports fans if the state's sports commission can snag some of the major college athletic events that will be relocated this year and next.
Both the NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference pulled numerous collegiate championships from North Carolina venues last week because of that state's legislation, known as House Bill 2, that has adverse implications for the LGBT community, including a restriction on public restroom use to birth certificate gender regardless of sexual self-identity.
As a result, Maryland Sports -- the agency that works to bring sports attractions of all stripes to Maryland -- hopes to land some of those events that will be on the move.
At the top of the wish list is the 2017 NCAA Division I women's lacrosse championship May 26-28 that had been scheduled to be played in Cary, N.C.
