It’d be easy to overlook blowout victories against a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent in Howard and a Conference USA foe in Florida International, but Maryland fans likely learned to not take any victory for granted after a 3-9 season in 2015.
The solid start to the DJ Durkin era continued with a 41-14 win over FIU (0-2) in rain-soaked Miami, Fla. Sept. 9. Junior linebacker Jermaine Carter, Jr. got Maryland (2-0) off to a quick start. Carter picked off an Alex McGough pass – which was tipped by senior cornerback Alvin Hill – and ran it 14 yards into the end zone late in the first quarter for a 10-0 Terps lead.
Maryland’s offense took over from there, leading the Terps to a 41-7 lead by the end of the third quarter. It was another clean game for senior Perry Hills, completing 13 of 18 passes for 210 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Hills also ran eight times for 52 yards.
