During the 2015 football season at Stevenson, the Mustangs' defensive led all NCAA Division III teams in turnovers, turnover margin and interceptions. Judging from its season-opening performance, the defense could be the difference again this year.
The Mustangs set a school single-game record with six interceptions during their 42-28 victory against visiting North Carolina Wesleyan Sept. 2. Stevenson, now 5-1 in season openers since the program began playing during the 2011 campaign, will try for its fourth consecutive 2-0 start Sept. 10, when the Mustangs travel to Reading, Pa., for a crucial early season matchup with defending Middle Atlantic Conference champion Albright.
Against North Carolina Wesleyan, Stevenson's defense set up two short scoring drives and scored the eventual game-winning touchdown. Senior safety Billy Lewis led the way with a career-high three interceptions. Lewis, who was named to the D3football.com national Team of the Week Sept. 6, was joined by senior linebacker Cory Pietrzyk (two interceptions) and senior safety Austin Tennessee (one pick).
