Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton hit the disabled list due to a groin injury and will likely miss the rest of the regular season. This is not the news fantasy owners want to hear heading down the stretch. However, this is also not the first time Stanton has landed on the disabled list late in the season, and we have officially reached the point in which he is a significant injury risk for those wanting to invest in the slugger.
The 26-year-old has not played 150 games since 2011 and has only played 145 games once in the last four years, which is about to be five years with this injury. Stanton is one of the premier power hitters in baseball, but unfortunately, it's hard to trust the outfielder.
The other big news in fantasy baseball involves reliever Jonathan Papelbon. The Washington Nationals finally had enough and released the one-time elite closer. The Nationals acquired Mark Melancon at the trade deadline, which revealed the writing on the wall for Papelbon's future in Washington. As of now, fantasy owners should hold on to the pitcher, as there is a chance he latches on with another team soon and could be the closer. However, if he remains a free agent as September approaches, its fine to release him, as you can't afford to roster a player who brings nothing to the table this late in the season.
