Miller, Miller & Canby attorneys Jody Kline and James (Jim) Thompson have each been selected for inclusion in the 2017 Edition of The Best Lawyers in America®. This will mark the 11th consecutive year for both attorneys to achieve this recognition, as both have been named to this list since 2007. Jody Kline is recognized in the field of Land Use and Zoning Law and Jim Thompson is recognized in Eminent Domain and Condemnation Law.

Jody Kline joined Miller, Miller & Canby in 1974, has been a principal of the firm since 1981 and has served as head of the Land Development practice area since that time. Mr. Kline's practice concentrates on land use, zoning and subdivision law in Montgomery County and he has represented clients in many of the County’s planning and economic development initiatives. His practice includes advising clients on zoning, special exception, subdivision, master planning, building permit issuance, and administrative and real estate matters related to land development. He represents private clients, non-profit entities and municipal corporations and agencies. He has qualified and testified in both the Circuit Court for Montgomery County and in the United States District Court for Maryland as an expert in land use and zoning law, and he has been a guest speaker at numerous professional seminars and conferences. Mr. Kline is a member of the Bar Association of Montgomery County and the Maryland State Bar Association. On the former, he has served as Secretary, a member of the Executive Committee, Chairman of the Administrative Law Section and as member of various other committees. Related to his practice areas, Mr. Kline is a member of the Urban Land Institute, the American Planning Association and the Maryland National Capital Building Industry Association.

Jim Thompson has led Miller, Miller & Canby's Litigation practice for more than 25 years. He concentrates his practice in eminent domain and real estate valuation litigation (including ad valorem tax appeals). Recently, one of his significant ad valorem tax appeals, Genon-Atlantic, LLC v. State Dept. of Assessments & Taxation, was selected as a national “Top 10 Ad Valorem Tax Case” for 2015-2016 among cases in the communications, energy and transportation sectors. For more than a decade, Mr. Thompson represented Maryland in the Owners’ Counsel of America, a national network of property rights attorneys with demonstrated excellence in this area, focusing upon the representation of landowners in eminent domain litigation. He also focuses in civil litigation, including complex real estate and business/commercial disputes. Mr. Thompson lectures in national eminent domain litigation seminars conducted by ALI-CLE, as well as in the State of Maryland, where he assists in giving legal education seminars for lawyers, appraisers, and right-of-way agents. He has also authored a variety of articles regarding eminent domain and has worked with the Maryland legislature to reform eminent domain laws and protect the rights of property owners.
