The announcement that Maryland running back Wes Brown will miss the first three games of the season has presented an early opportunity for the Terps' other backs.
Head coach DJ Durkin announced Aug. 10 that Brown will serve a three-game suspension for violating the student-athlete code, an infraction that occurred before Durkin arrived in College Park, Md. So the Terps will need to look elsewhere to establish its ground game.
Senior quarterback Perry Hills is actually the top returning rusher, gaining 535 yards on 109 carries last year. Sophomore running back Ty Johnson, who looks to be in terrific shape in camp, gained 250 yards on 35 carries in 2015 and flashed explosiveness. Two true freshmen in Jake Funk and Lorenzo Harrison will get an opportunity, as will senior Trey Edmunds, a transfer from Virginia Tech who was working with the twos in practice Aug. 10.
