JBG’s 2016 Days of Giving Concludes with 28 Days of Community Service

8/9/16

Annual program supports affordable housing, sustainability, healthy communities

The JBG Companies’ award-winning Days of Giving community service program has concluded its 2016 campaign, marking the seventh year for this annual volunteer effort by JBG employees. This year more than 500 JBG team members participated in 28 days of service—volunteering more than 1,900 hours.

Two families looking forward to owning their first homes, a military veteran and his disabled roommate living in unsafe conditions, and thousands of food-insecure residents were among those who benefited from this year’s Days of Giving. Twelve non-profits focused on the mission areas of affordable housing, healthy communities and sustainability partnered with JBG for the community service program.

“Days of Giving is inspiring,” said JBG Partner Leslie Ludwig. “Our goal in starting the program was to give back to the communities where we do business, but we quickly learned that our volunteer experiences were hugely impactful for each of us as well. Days of Giving is rewarding, and something we all look forward to participating in each year.”

The program kicked off this spring with Dreaming Out Loud, a nonprofit that works to build community-based food systems in Washington, D.C., for neighborhoods without easy access to groceries. JBG volunteers spent a day getting an organic garden in Southwest ready for the growing season and summer programs. The 100-plus plants planted that day have yielded over 5,000 pounds of fresh produce for city residents in need of healthy food options.

“The day really helped us get ready for what has been our most impactful season to date,” said Chris Bradshaw, founder and CEO of Dreaming Out Loud.

The other Days of Giving charitable partners this year were Bread for the City, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and Rebuilding Together Alexandria, all new to the program, and returning groups Anacostia Watershed Society, Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, DC Greens, Food and Friends, Habitat for Humanity Northern Virginia, A Wider Circle and Yachad.

Days of Giving is an annual effort under JBG’s corporate giving arm, JBG Cares, which supports nonprofits that preserve and enhance the communities where JBG does business. Since its launch in 2010, JBG employees have logged more than 12,000 hours of community service, receiving paid time off to volunteer. JBG and Days of Giving received the Montgomery Serves Award in 2013 for outstanding community service.
