Looking for a boost to their starting rotation, the Orioles acquired veteran left-hander Wade Miley from the Seattle Mariners July 31, less than 24 hours shy of MLB's non-waiver trade deadline. The Orioles sent minor league lefty Ariel Miranda to the Mariners in return.
Miley, 29, is 7-8 with a 4.98 ERA during 19 starts for the Mariners this season. He is averaging 6.6 strikeouts and 2.7 walks per nine innings while posting a 1.348 WHIP. During his six-year career, Miley is 56-54 with a 4.07 ERA during 157 games (153 starts) for three teams.
A first round pick of the Diamondbacks in 2008, Miley his best year in 2012 with Arizona during his first full season in the majors. He went 16-11 with a 3.33 ERA during 32 games (29 starts), earning a National League All-Star appearance and placing second in the NL Rookie of the Year vote. However, Miley hasn't recaptured the same success since, as his ERA has risen every year. After parts of four seasons with the Diamondbacks, he spent one year with the Boston Red Sox, who then shipped him to the Mariners following the 2015 season.
