The UMBC athletic coaching staff has undergone several changes during the past four months. During that time, the Retrievers have witnessed the retirement of two longtime head coaches and the hiring of three new mentors.
But Phil Stern isn't going anywhere. UMBC announced July 14 that Stern, one of the school's longest-tenured head coaches, signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the school's women's basketball program through the 2020-21 season. The new pact will give Stern a chance to move his program into UMBC's under-construction athletic center. He will also have the opportunity to continue building a program he has guided for the past 14 years.
"To be here as long as I have means a lot to me, especially in today's environment," Stern said. "[The contract extension] shows the commitment of the school."
