The Orioles' nine-game West Coast swing finally came to an end -- if several hours later than the Birds anticipated.
During their longest game of the year July 6, the O's outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-4, after 14 innings and nearly 5.5 hours of baseball. The hard-fought victory helped the Birds eke out a 4-5 record during the trip, getting the O's back on their feet after their ugly four-game sweep in Seattle. The Birds bookended their trip with a pair of victories apiece in San Diego and L.A., winning two of the three series to remain 2.5 games in front in the American League East.
What was supposed to be the Orioles' getaway day game -- starting at noon West Coast time -- extended into the evening, as the Birds' and Dodgers' pitching staffs refused to budge. After O's right fielder Mark Trumbo tied the game at four with his second homer of the game (and MLB-leading 26th) in the sixth inning, seven full innings passed without either team notching a run. Not until Jonathan Schoop's two-run, two-out double in the top of the 14th did a team break through.
