The first-place Orioles received major All-Star recognition July 5, as five members of the club were selected to the American League team.
Infielder Manny Machado was voted by fans to be the AL's starting third baseman, while four others -- outfielder Mark Trumbo, catcher Matt Wieters, left-hander Zach Britton and righty Brad Brach -- were selected as reserves.
This marks the fifth consecutive year the O's have had at least three All-Star representatives, and the first time since 2013 they've had five.
Machado will be making his first career All-Star start; his previous two All-Star selections (2013 and 2015) were as a reserve. Machado won the fan vote at third base ahead of reigning Most Valuable Player Josh Donaldson of the Toronto Blue Jays. Even if he hadn't been voted the starter, Machado was a lock to earn a spot on the All-Star roster. He's in the midst of a MVP-caliber season in 2016, batting .325/.380/.584/.964 with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs, while playing excellent defense at shortstop (45 games) and third base (35 games). According to FanGraphs, Machado is tied for fourth in the AL in Wins Above Replacement at 4.0.
