The red-hot Orioles made home run history June 29 -- and they have the chance to break a major league record with one game remaining in the month.
The Birds hit their 55th home run in June during their 12-6 drubbing of the Padres in San Diego, matching the MLB record for June homers set by the 1996 Oakland Athletics. The A's played 29 games that month, whereas the O's have equaled their feat during just 27 contests thus far, with their final game of the month scheduled for June 30 in Seattle. That gives the Birds nine more innings to potentially bash a record-breaking homer.
In fact, the MLB record for most homers in any single month is still within reach as well. That mark sits at 58, which was accomplished by the 1987 Orioles (in May) and the 1999 Mariners (also in May). The O's will need three homers against the Mariners June 30 to equal that mark and four to break it. It's certainly not out of the question, considering the Birds have already had nine games this month with three or more homers and four games with at least four homers.
