With the MLB All-Star game two weeks away, it's time to have a yearly descent into stupidity, or as it's better known, fan voting for All-Star starters. While I understand and love provincial loyalties, I am again perplexed as to why MLB allows fans to have a significant voice in a game that ends up deciding home-field advantage in the World Series.
Where is MLB's desire for fan input in things that really mean something. For example, why it's fair for start times of games to be changed any damned time a team wants to. Or how about the fan's input on the never-ending price increases of concessions and gear? The next time a fan has to sit out in a rain delay for hours before a determination is made to play (and you have no choice if you want your money's worth, but to wait and see if you can trade the ticket in), maybe you'd like a seat at the table to propose a time limit before you can get a refund or exchange a ticket.
But, no, the really important and mindless work of choosing a starting team is handed to the fans on a nightly basis at a ballpark near you. And while it's not as bad as a year ago, when Kansas City Royals fans made a mockery of fan voting for all to see, those same group of "true blue" fans are almost doing as poor of a job.
