Three Local Collegiate Players Chosen In Top Half Of MLB Draft

University of Maryland junior pitcher Mike Shawaryn, UMBC senior shortstop Kevin Lachance and Towson University junior catcher Brady Policelli are the latest local players to get a chance at a professional baseball career.

The trio of NCAA Division I players were taken in the top half of the June 9-11 Major League Baseball Draft. Shawaryn was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round, while Lachance was a 10th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Policelli was chosen in the 13 th round by the Detroit Tigers.

Shawaryn was the 148th overall selection and the first Terp chosen by the Red Sox since Matt Marquis during the 2011 draft. Shawaryn set the school’s career records with 30 victories, 307 strikeouts and 307.1 innings pitched. The native of Carneys Point, N.J., also holds Maryland’s single-season standards for wins (13) and strikeouts (138), with both marks set during the 2015 campaign.
