Collegiate sports seasons are finished, but the awards are still coming in for student-athletes at central Maryland colleges and universities. A total of 15 student-athletes from five different schools have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America teams (Baseball and At-Large).
The list of local Academic All-Americans included six students with 4.0 GPAs. Athletes from Navy, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, McDaniel and Stevenson were represented. Navy led the way with eight Academic All-Americans followed by Johns Hopkins' four selections. Maryland, McDaniel and Stevenson each placed one student-athlete on the prestigious teams.
Glenn Balbus, a senior fencer from Johns Hopkins, was named the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year (Division III Men's At-Large Team). A first-team choice for the second straight year, the mechanical engineering major posted a 4.0 GPA. Balbus, who was a Rhodes Scholar finalist, also received an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and a national science foundation graduate research fellowship.
