Major League Baseball reportedly handed Orioles shortstop Manny Machado a four-game suspension and a $2,500 fine June 9 for his role in the Birds' benches-clearing brawl against the Kansas City Royals June 7.
Machado charged the mound in the fifth inning after Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura drilled him in the back with his first pitch, prompting both teams to spill out of the dugouts in an on-field confrontation. Earlier in the game, Machado had exchanged words with Ventura after two pitches came inside on him.
Machado has chosen to appeal the suspension, and he was in the Orioles' starting lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays June 9. Meanwhile, center fielder Adam Jones might be picking up Machado's $2,500 fine, telling the media June 7, "I've got Manny's fine, and the rest is history."
Whenever Machado ultimately serves his suspension, it will end the longest consecutive games streak in the majors. Machado's start June 9 is No. 221 in a row.
