The next leader of the Johns Hopkins University athletic program will come from the NCAA Division I ranks.
Alanna Shanahan, who has served as the deputy director of athletics and senior women's administrator at the University of Pennsylvania since 2012, has been named as the new director of athletics and recreation at Johns Hopkins. Shanahan is expected to take the reins July 18. She will succeed Tom Calder, who is leaving the department he has headed since 1995 to become the school's director of alumni programs July 1.
"Alanna clearly has the passion, energy and vision needed to direct Hopkins athletics," Johns Hopkins president Ronald J. Daniels said in a statement. "Her experience at Penn working with an outstanding university and its motivated, high-achieving student-athletes will serve her extremely well as the leader of the Johns Hopkins department of athletics and recreation."
